JOHANNY VARGAS - MY STORY
As a young doctor...
When university degrees and medical specialties were not enough to heal me...
Hi! I’m Johanny, Loly at home, and Lola for my colleagues and friends. I am a passionate believer in God and the power of prayer.
My story begins in the most beautiful Caribbean island, Dominican Republic, where I was born and raised. Having Spanish roots, I consider myself Dominican-Spanish. I am the youngest of four siblings and have been fortunate to grow up surrounded by the beauty of nature and the unconditional love of my family, who have always fought by my side to pursue my dreams. I consider myself a lucky and blessed woman for the life I have had.
Being a little child, cooking became an important part of my life, I learnt to cook and take pleasure in selecting the best ingredients at the local fairs and markets. “Less super and more market“. I have been always surrounded by traditional Caribbean natural remedies for ailments. So I enjoy every meal, I keen on walking in nature, spending time at the beach, and being surrounded by my beloved. And, of course, helping people to recover health makes me feel deep satisfaction.
I have been always surrounded by traditional Caribbean natural remedies for ailments.
Although I initially dreamed of becoming a “children’s doctor,” my path took an unexpected turn when I began studying and working at the National Institute of Forensic Sciences in Dominican Republic. Eventually, I decided to quit forensics and return to the world of the living. I embarked on a journey of training at two prestigious medical centers: the University Hospital Complex in Vigo, Spain, and Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, where I became a pulmonologist.
However, my journey in medicine still had some hidden surprises. Soon, I began to experience intense pain in my neck that later spread to my back, chest, hip and knee, accompanied by lesions on various parts of my skin. My faith and determination helped me to persevere in this physical, emotional and spiritual battle.
... a very sick young woman
After a series of medical consultations, multiple studies and medications, a lesion was finally identified in the right third costal arch that required surgery. My doctor, an exceptional professional, diagnosed two immunological diseases: SAPHO Syndrome, and incomplete Behçet’s Syndrome. The fact of having a diagnose made me “happy”, but my life would be bound to medication having little prospect to lead the life a young woman expects.
Grateful for the support and commitment of my doctors, I began to question whether our knowledge on health was enough, and whether the healthcare system was more oriented to medicate than cure. I refused to accept a life limited by the healthcare system.
I began to research and discovered the influence that food has over health. I stuck to a diet free of gluten, cow dairy, processed foods, trans fats and sugar, so all my food became “real” and organic. I also incorporated exercise into my daily routine, which was a turning point in my health condition.
As I kept on studying and praying for answers, I did a two-year master’s degree in sleep disorders and sleep disordered breathing, which made me aware of the crucial importance of good sleep. During that period, I was also immersed in the fascinating world of gut microbiota and its impact on health. This knowledge on oral, pulmonary and intestinal microbiota, as well as on food sensitivities and intestinal permeability, made me aware of the healing power of food.
However, I still felt that something was missing in my quest for wellness. I had not adequately considered the role of emotions and stress in my health. So, I decided to enroll in a health coaching program at the Complutense University of Madrid to address this crucial aspect.
When I reached a point where I could no longer improve on my own, and continued to experience pain and stress-related health problems, I came across PsychoNeuroImmunoEndocrinology (PNIe) and Integrative Medicine. These interdisciplinary scientific approaches study the complex interactions between the central nervous system, the immune system and the endocrine system, and how these interactions affect health and wellness.
This transformation not only changed my health, but also my professional perspective. First being a pulmonologist specialized in sleep and home respiratory therapies, I later became an integrative pulmonologist, expert in nutrition, disease and microbiota, eventually undertaking a master’s degree in PNIe and Integrative Medicine.
Rather than relying only on medication, my approach focuses on finding the origin of diseases and subsequently apply therapeutic tools to treat and eliminate them. My greatest desire is to accompany patients on their journey to good health and wellness by identifying and addressing the underlying causes of their symptoms and illnesses. In short, I am committed to helping people live healthy and fulfilling lives – welcome to my journey and the chance to transform yours together!
Choose a life non-dependent on medication.
Medication does not always bring permanent results and is often accompanied by side effects.
I guarantee that around 80% of patients can recover and maintain health, enjoying a full life without medication.
Often, the solution is far simpler than we have been told. Find out how you can recover your health control and enjoy a natural quality of life!
I have a deep desire to support my patients along their journey, however difficult it may be, helping them to regain long-lasting good health. In our, approximately, 1-hour online or in person consultation, we study your background from the earliest stages in your life, seeking the connection of the mind with the body in an integrative way. Preventing and intervening symptoms or diseases from healthy lifestyle habits: mobility / physical exercise that you enjoy in coherence with physiology, quality sleep, immunonutrition: food, immune system and intestinal microbiota. This in addition to pulmonological patients also includes all patients with digestive, skin, immune and hormonal disorders.
My main purpose is to change the current healthcare system paradigm, supporting and accompany my patients in the search, recovery and control of health and wellbeing.
Thank you for sharing your time, and reading me so far.
Best regards.
Johanny
